2021 Sir Leslie Herron Rugby Scholarship Update

“citizenship, scholarship, and a contribution to Rugby”

The Foundation is delighted to be able to provide an update on the 2021 Herron Scholarship recipients, who continue their personal achievements while making exceptional contributions to Rugby, even in the interrupted 2021 season. The Foundation looks forward to watching these young men continue on their Rugby journey.

Liam Andrews

During 2021, Liam regularly refereed schoolboy rugby, predominately at the 15A level. His success at this level was rewarded with opportunities to be involved in the refereeing of opens fixtures, including taking control of a 3rd XV game, and being an assistant referee for 1st XV games.

Liam also refereed in the Sydney Junior's competition, refereeing both U16 and U15 games. This gave him the opportunity to be an official at the 2021 U15 State Championships, where he was able to, under the guidance of referee coaches, develop his skills and learn more about game management.

As 2022 begins, Liam is continuing to referee in the Sydney Junior's competition and in addition, coaching a schoolboy U15 team.

Mitchell Watt

In 2021, Mitchell moved from Tamworth to Sydney to play with Randwick, starting in nine of the ten 1st Colts fixtures during the interrupted Shute Shield competition.

The Sydney lockdown allowed Mitchell to move back to Tamworth temporarily, where he linked up with NSW North-West Development Officer Garry Walsh, to assist with school programs and refereeing in the local high-school competition. During this time Mitchell was selected to play in a NSW Waratahs Gen Blue game prior to Christmas and then into the Waratahs u/20s side.

In early 2022 Mitchell was selected into the first Junior Wallabies first camp of the season in Canberra and hopes to be asked back for the second camp in late April.
